Stalked Bulbine
Bulbine frutescens
Bulbine frutescens is a versatile, evergreen succulent prized for its cheerful, star-shaped flowers, drought tolerance, and nearly year-round bloom season. Native to South Africa, this clumping, spreading perennial produces dense clusters of fleshy, cylindrical, pencil-like, bright green leaves that form an attractive, low mound. From spring through fall, it produces tall, slender, branching flower stalks bearing small, star-shaped blooms (½ to ¾ inch) in a range of vibrant colors including bright yellow, soft orange, and bicolor yellow-orange (also known as 'Hallmark'), creating a long-lasting, colorful display that attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Exceptionally drought, heat, and coastal tolerant, deer-resistant, and low-maintenance, it is an outstanding choice for borders, rock gardens, mass plantings, containers, xeriscape and Mediterranean gardens, and as a colorful ground cover.
