Cherokee Brave Flowering Dogwood
Cornus kousa Satomi'
Cherokee Brave is an improved cultivar of the native Pink Flowering Dogwood, bred for significantly better disease resistance. Its bracts are a deeper pink-red than the species, with a distinct white center. While more adaptable than the native species, it still prefers the cooler, more humid conditions found in coastal parts of the Bay Area over hot inland valleys.
-
Features showy, deep pink to red bracts with a striking white center, creating a vibrant floral display in early spring.
-
Offers improved resistance to dogwood anthracnose and powdery mildew compared to the straight native species, though not as bulletproof as Kousa varieties.
-
More adaptable and vigorous than the species, but still performs best with afternoon shade, consistent moisture, and good air circulation.
-
A good compromise for those who desire the classic native dogwood look but with better odds of success.
