Canary Island Date Palm

Phoenix canariensis

The Canary Island Date Palm is a monumental and iconic landscape palm, making a grand, formal statement. It develops a massive, diamond-patterned trunk topped with an enormous, dense crown of long, stiff, arching, feathery fronds that can be over 15 feet long. The old leaf bases create a stunning "pineapple" effect on the trunk. It is a slow-growing but ultimately huge tree, best suited for parks, large estates, or as a majestic street tree where it has ample space to reach its full, awe-inspiring potential.

  • Majestic, Monumental Size: A massive, slow-growing palm that becomes a towering landscape focal point.

  • Spectacular "Pineapple" Trunk: The thick trunk is patterned with the attractive, persistent bases of old leaves.

  • Dense, Arched Canopy: Produces a very full, rounded crown of long, deep green, pinnate fronds.

  • Drought & Wind Tolerant: Very resilient once established, tolerating coastal conditions and dry spells.

  • Requires Significant Space: Not for small yards; needs room for its wide-spreading crown and ultimate height of 50-60 feet.
