Karo

Pittosporum crassifolium

Karo is a supremely tough, coastal-hardy evergreen shrub or small tree, instantly recognizable by its thick, leathery leaves with distinctive felt-like, white undersides. It thrives where other plants struggle, tolerating relentless salt spray, strong winds, and poor soils. In spring, it produces unusual, dark maroon flowers with a spicy fragrance. Its rugged character and striking foliage make it an indispensable choice for creating bulletproof hedges, windbreaks, or sculptural accents in exposed seaside gardens.

  • Distinctive Felted Foliage: Features thick, leathery, dark green leaves with a prominent, dense white tomentum (felt) on the undersides.

  • Extreme Coastal Hardiness: Exceptionally tolerant of the harshest coastal conditions: salt spray, wind, and sandy, poor soils.

  • Unique Maroon Flowers & Seedpods: Produces clusters of small, dark maroon to purple, fragrant flowers in spring, followed by decorative woody seed capsules that split open to reveal bright red seeds.

  • Dense, Wind-Resistant Form: Grows into a very dense, compact shrub or small tree (12-20 ft tall), providing excellent wind protection.

  • Low-Maintenance & Structural: Requires minimal care and is highly resistant to pests and diseases. Perfect for exposed hedges, topiary, or seaside specimens.
