Mexican Deer Grass

Muhlenbergia dubia

Muhlenbergia dubia, commonly known as Mexican Deer Grass or Pine Muhly, is a compact, clump-forming ornamental grass prized for its fine-textured, evergreen foliage and delicate, airy flower spikes. Native to Texas and northern Mexico, this warm-season perennial forms a tidy, fountain-like mound of stiff, narrow, dark green to gray-green leaves that maintain a neat, upright habit. From late summer through fall, it produces an abundance of very fine, slender, upright flower stems rising above the foliage, bearing small, purple-tinged to lavender-pink flower spikes that mature to buff and creamy-white, creating a soft, misty, cloud-like effect. Exceptionally drought-tolerant once established, heat tolerant, and adaptable to a range of well-drained soils, it is an outstanding choice for mass plantings, borders, rock gardens, slopes, containers, and as a low-maintenance accent in water-wise and native landscapes.
