White Icicle Flowering Currant

Ribes sanguineum ‘White Icicle’

Ribes sanguineum 'White Icicle' is a striking, deciduous shrub prized for its long, pendulous clusters of pure white spring flowers and attractive, fragrant foliage. This selection of the native California flowering currant produces an abundance of showy, 3-6 inch long racemes of bright white, tubular flowers that hang like icy "icicles" from the branches in early to mid-spring . The flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. The aromatic, lobed, dark green leaves have a fuzzy texture and serrated margins, turning attractive shades of yellow to red in autumn before falling. The flowers are followed by small, black-blue berries with a waxy bloom in summer, which provide food for birds. With its upright, vase-shaped habit and excellent drought tolerance once established, it is a superb choice for wildlife gardens, native plantings, mixed borders, and as an informal hedge or specimen.
