California Native Blackberry
Rubus ursinus Native Blackberry
Rubus ursinus, commonly known as California Native Blackberry or Pacific Blackberry, is a vigorous, semi-deciduous trailing shrub prized for its exceptionally flavorful, aromatic fruit and its value to native wildlife. Native to western North America, including California, this thorny vine spreads by rooting at the tips of its canes, forming dense, impenetrable thickets. Its green leaves are compound, divided into three serrated leaflets. In spring, female plants produce white to pale pink flowers, which are followed in summer by small, fragrant, sweet-tart blackberries that ripen from red to deep purple-black. The fruit is highly variable but renowned for its intense, complex flavor. A magnet for beneficial insects, pollinators, and birds, it is an outstanding choice for wildlife gardens, native plantings, and edible landscapes.
