Description

Arctostaphylos edmundsii 'Carmel Sur' is a charming, low-growing evergreen ground cover prized for its dense, spreading habit and attractive, rounded foliage. Native to the California coast, this fast-growing selection forms a low, mounding carpet of small, dark green, oval to egg-shaped leaves on short, upright, reddish stems. In late winter to early spring, it produces clusters of small, pendulous, urn-shaped flowers in white and pale pink that are highly attractive to hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators. These are followed by small, edible, red berry-like fruits that provide food for birds and other wildlife. Exceptionally drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and adaptable to serpentine and clay soils, it is an outstanding choice for slopes, coastal gardens, native plantings, and as a low-maintenance ground cover.
