Description

Fruitland Silverberry is a large, fast-growing evergreen prized for its unique, edible fruit and exceptional toughness. It forms a substantial shrub or small tree with handsome, wavy-edged leaves that are silvery when young, maturing to a gray-green with rusty speckles. Its true distinction is the autumn harvest of red, silver-speckled berries, which offer a complex, tart flavor perfect for adventurous cooks making jams, pies, or country wines. An ideal choice for edible landscaping, large wildlife hedges, or as a resilient windbreak in challenging coastal sites.

  • Unique Edible Fruit: Produces an abundant crop of oval, red berries dusted with silver specks. The fruit has a tangy, tart flavor with a distinctive astringent aftertaste, ideal for preserves and baking.

  • Large & Fast-Growing: Quickly matures into a large, dense shrub or multi-trunked small tree, reaching 10-15 feet tall and wide.

  • Extreme Environmental Tolerance: Thrives in the most difficult sites, with high resistance to salt spray, wind, drought, and poor, sandy soils.

  • Wildlife & Pollinator Value: The fragrant fall flowers attract pollinators, and the fruit is a valuable food source for birds in late winter.

  • Dual-Purpose Landscape Plant: Serves equally well as a productive edible hedge, a large privacy screen, or a resilient coastal specimen.

Faqs

Q: When is the fruit ripe, and how is it best used?
A: The fruit ripens in late fall to early winter. It is tart and astringent when fresh but excellent when cooked. It is traditionally used for making jam, jelly, fruit leather, or fermented into wine, where sugar and heat balance its unique flavor.

Q: Does it have thorns?
A: Yes, like many in the genus, it typically has scattered, sharp thorns on its branches. This enhances its effectiveness as a barrier hedge but requires care when handling and harvesting fruit. Wear gloves.
