Description

Raywood Ash is a popular, fast-growing deciduous shade tree celebrated for its exceptional, reliable fall color. Its fine-textured, dark green foliage forms a dense, symmetrical canopy that provides excellent shade in summer. In autumn, it puts on a brilliant, long-lasting display, with leaves turning a consistent, deep wine-red to burgundy-purple. A sterile, seedless cultivar, it is cleaner than the species and is valued for its adaptability to heat, drought, and a variety of soils, making it a classic choice for streets, parks, and large lawns.

  • Outstanding Fall Color: Famous for its stunning and reliable display of deep burgundy, wine-red, and purple foliage each autumn.

  • Fast-Growing Shade Tree: Develops a strong, upright trunk and a dense, oval to rounded crown, quickly providing ample shade.

  • Sterile & Clean: This cultivar is seedless (male), eliminating the messy seed clusters (samaras) produced by female ash trees.

  • Adaptable & Drought Tolerant: Once established, it is very tolerant of heat, drought, wind, and a range of soil types, including alkaline soils.

  • Important Note: While once widely planted, it is highly susceptible to the invasive Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). Its use is now discouraged in regions where EAB is present or expected. Always check local advisories.

Faqs

Q: Is it still recommended to plant Raywood Ash?
A: Due to the devastating threat of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), many horticulturists and municipalities no longer recommend planting any ash species (Fraxinus), including 'Raywood', in areas where EAB is established or nearby. In the western US (including parts of California), EAB has not yet been detected but is considered a major future threat. Consider planting a non-ash alternative with similar attributes, such as Celtis (Hackberry) or Quercus (Oak) species.

Q: What are its water needs?
A: While drought-tolerant once mature, it performs best with deep, infrequent watering during the dry season, especially in the first few years after planting. Avoid frequent, shallow watering.
