Peach leaf curl is a fungal disease caused by Taphrina deformans. It infects peach and nectarine trees when cool, wet weather coincides with new leaf growth in late winter and early spring. In the San Francisco Bay Area, we often have rain and fog through February and March, which makes this disease a common problem for backyard growers.

Early symptoms include leaves that are distorted, thickened, puckered or curled with reddish or yellowish tints. As the disease progresses, leaves can drop prematurely, reducing tree vigor and fruit production.
Key Bay Area timing for prevention
The best time to prevent leaf curl is before buds break and leaves start to expand. In the Bay Area, that usually means late February through early March. Treat trees when they are still dormant and before new growth emerges. Once leaves are curled and infected, treatments cannot reverse the damage.

How it works
Fungal spores overwinter on bark and buds. When rainfall and cool temperatures trigger bud swelling, spores germinate and infect tender tissues. A protective fungicide layer applied before this window blocks infection and greatly reduces disease risk.
Preventive approach
-
Spray after the tree is dormant but before green buds open
-
Cover the entire tree, including bark, branches, and buds

Tips for success
Spray on a dry day when no rain is forecast for at least 24 hours. Follow the product label directions for mixing and application. Good coverage and correct timing are more important than multiple sprays.
After prevention
If your peach leaves are already curled, focus on removing fallen infected leaves and cleaning around the tree. Improve air flow and minimize moisture sitting on foliage during wet weather. Prepare now for next season’s prevention for best results.
