🌱 PLANTING GUIDE
How to plant trees and shrubs for long-term health in Bay Area conditions
1. Choose the Right Spot
-
Ensure 6–8 hours of sun for most fruit trees and flowering shrubs.
-
Check spacing: leave room for mature width and airflow.
-
Avoid low areas where water collects and causes root rot.
2. Prepare the Planting Hole
-
Dig a hole 2× the width of the container, no deeper than the rootball.
-
Loosen surrounding soil so new roots can expand.
-
In Bay Area clay soils, roughen the sides to prevent “pot effect.”
3. Set the Plant Correctly
-
Keep the root flare above ground level.
-
Backfill with native soil; avoid heavy amendments that create artificial soil layers.
-
Lightly tamp soil—do not compact.
4. Water Deeply After Planting
-
Slow, deep soaking helps eliminate air pockets.
-
Create a small soil berm to hold water during the first months.
5. Mulch for Moisture & Weed Control
-
Add 2–3 inches of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk.
-
Mulch stabilizes soil temperature during heatwaves and cold spells.
6. First-Year Care
-
The first year is “establishment mode.”
-
Water consistently, avoid heavy pruning, and protect from extreme heat or wind.
