Watering sounds simple, but it is one of the most common reasons new plants struggle.
Too little water can dry out a newly planted root ball.
Too much water can keep roots constantly saturated and reduce the oxygen they need.
The right approach depends on the plant, soil, weather, season, drainage, and how long the plant has been in the ground.
For Bay Area gardens, the best rule is simple:
Check the soil. Water deeply when needed. Adjust as conditions change.
Why New Plants Need Special Attention
A newly planted tree or shrub does not immediately have roots throughout the surrounding soil.
Most of its active roots are still inside the original nursery root ball.
This means a newly planted tree can become dry even when the surrounding soil looks moist.
