 Living Plants

Size, shape and branching naturally vary

Description

The Century Plant is the iconic, colossal agave of legend. This massive, architectural succulent forms a towering rosette of broad, gray-green, sword-like leaves with formidable spines. After a decade or more, it sends up a gigantic, once-in-a-lifetime flower stalk up to 20-30 feet tall, a truly spectacular event before the main plant dies. Best suited for large-scale landscapes, parks, or estates where its grand scale and dramatic lifecycle can be fully appreciated.

  • A massive, fast-growing agave forming rosettes 6-12 feet wide.

  • Leaves are stiff, gray-green to blue-green with sharp marginal spines and a terminal spike.

  • Monocarpic: flowers once after 10-30 years with a towering, branching flower stalk, then dies.

  • Produces prolific offsets ("pups"), often forming large colonies.

  • Extremely drought, heat, and wind tolerant.

  • A bold architectural statement for large properties, xeriscapes, or desert-themed gardens.

Faqs

Q: Is it really poisonous?
A: The sap can be a severe skin irritant, causing contact dermatitis. Always wear gloves, long sleeves, and eye protection when handling or pruning. The sharp spines are also a physical hazard.

Q: How do I manage the offsets?
A: The plant will produce many pups. You can leave them to form a large, natural colony, or dig them up and replant or give them away to control its spread. Remove pups with a sharp shovel, ensuring some roots are attached.
