Description

Agave tequilana 'Weber Blue', commonly known as Weber's Blue Agave or Tequila Agave, is a striking, evergreen, rosette-forming succulent prized for its bold, architectural form and its role as the primary source of tequila production. Native to Mexico, this dramatic plant features thick, rigid, blue-gray to silvery-blue leaves with sharp, serrated margins and a formidable terminal spine. It forms a large, symmetrical rosette that makes a powerful sculptural statement in any landscape. After many years, mature plants produce a tall, branching flower stalk that attracts pollinators before the rosette completes its life cycle. Exceptionally drought-tolerant, heat-loving, and deer-resistant, it is an outstanding choice for xeriscape gardens, rock gardens, containers, slopes, and modern landscapes.

Faqs

Q: How large does Weber's Blue Agave get?
A: It forms a large, dramatic rosette, typically reaching 5 feet in both height and spread at maturity.

Q: How much sun does it need?
A: For the most vibrant blue-gray color and compact growth, plant in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily). It tolerates partial shade but the color and form may be less pronounced.

Q: Is it drought tolerant?
A: Yes, once established, it is exceptionally drought and heat tolerant. Water regularly during its first year, then little to no supplemental water is needed. It thrives in well-drained soils.

Q: Does it have sharp spines?
A: Yes, it has sharp, serrated teeth along the leaf margins and a formidable terminal spine. Use caution when planting near walkways or high-traffic areas.

Q: Does it die after flowering?
A: Yes, like most agaves, it is monocarpic, meaning the rosette dies after flowering (which may take 10-20+ years). However, it typically produces offsets ("pups") around the base, which can be replanted.

Q: Is it used to make tequila?
A: Yes, Agave tequilana 'Weber Blue' is the primary agave species used for commercial tequila production in Mexico, prized for its high sugar content.
