Description

The Chinese Apricot is a hardy and ancient variety, treasured for its ability to thrive and produce sweet fruit in colder continental climates where most apricots cannot. This vigorous tree requires substantial winter chill and blooms later than many varieties, offering protection from late frosts. It produces a good crop of small to medium, golden-orange fruit with sweet, juicy flesh. For gardeners in regions with truly cold winters and a desire for homegrown apricots, the Chinese variety is a time-tested and reliable choice.

  • One of the most cold-hardy apricot varieties, capable of thriving in harsh winter climates.

  • Requires high winter chill (~700+ hours), making it unsuitable for mild-winter areas.

  • Blooms later in spring, reducing risk of frost damage to flowers.

  • Self-pollinating and produces small to medium, sweet, freestone fruit.

  • A vigorous, large tree with good disease resistance.

  • An excellent choice for northern states and high-chill mountainous regions.

Flavor Profile:

  • Flavor: Sweet and pleasant, with a traditional apricot taste.

  • Texture: Juicy and tender when ripe.

  • Best Uses: Best for fresh eating and home preserves. Its hardiness is its primary feature.

Faqs

Q: Will this grow in a warm climate like California?
A: No. The Chinese Apricot requires prolonged winter cold and will not perform well in mild-winter climates (Zones 8-10). It is specifically bred for cold regions (Zones 4-7).

Q: How does it compare to Tilton for cold climates?
A: Both are cold-hardy. Chinese is often harder and requires more chill, making it better for the very coldest limits. Tilton may have slightly larger fruit and is a more widely planted commercial variety for cold areas. Both are excellent choices for tough climates.
