Description

Baby Cakes Blackberry is a revolutionary, compact blackberry cultivar that brings the joy of homegrown fruit to small spaces. This naturally dwarf, thornless plant forms a tidy, self-supporting, rounded shrub that produces an abundant harvest of large, sweet, intensely flavorful berries from mid-summer into fall . Bred by the renowned Paulk family in Georgia, 'Baby Cakes' is a primocane-fruiting (everbearing) variety, meaning it produces fruit on first-year canes, eliminating the need for complex pruning . Its compact, bushy habit (3-4 feet) makes it ideal for containers, patios, and small gardens where traditional sprawling blackberries would not fit. With its thornless stems, self-pollinating nature, and exceptional flavor, it is one of the most accessible and rewarding blackberries for home gardeners.

Faqs

  • Q: Is this a trailing or upright blackberry?A: It has an upright, semi-trailing growth habit. While it can support itself to some degree, providing a simple trellis or tying the canes to a fence will keep the planting tidy, improve air circulation, and make harvesting much easier.
  • Q: How and when do I prune it?A: Blackberries fruit on second-year canes (floricanes). After harvest in summer, cut the canes that just fruited down to the ground. In late winter, thin the new first-year canes (primocanes), leaving the 4-6 strongest per plant, and tip-prune them to encourage branching.
  • Q: When can I expect fruit?A: Planting a dormant bare-root or established potted plant typically yields a first harvest in the second summer. Berries ripen from mid-summer to early fall (July-September) in Zone 9a.
