Description

Carex divulsa, commonly known as Berkeley Sedge or European Grey Sedge, is a durable, evergreen perennial grass prized for its fine-textured, deep green foliage and its exceptional adaptability to a wide range of conditions, from dry shade to wet soils. This European native forms a dense, arching, fountain-like clump of narrow, grassy leaves that provide year-round structure and color. In late spring to early summer, it produces small, inconspicuous, greenish flower spikes that mature to brown. Exceptionally tough, it tolerates drought, heat, humidity, and full shade, making it an outstanding choice for mass plantings, borders, edging, under trees, containers, and as a low-maintenance, no-mow ground cover or lawn alternative.

A: It is highly adaptable to moisture levels. It tolerates drought once established but also thrives in wet, poorly drained soils, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens and boggy areas.

Q: Is it a good lawn alternative?
A: Yes, it is an excellent no-mow ground cover and lawn alternative. Its evergreen foliage provides year-round interest and its dense root system suppresses weeds.

Q: Is it deer resistant?
A: Yes, it is generally resistant to deer and rabbits.

Q: How should I care for it?
A: It requires little maintenance. In late winter or early spring, you can cut it back to about 3-4 inches above the ground to remove old foliage and make way for fresh new growth. Divide clumps every 3-4 years to maintain vigor.
