Description

Imperial Blue Cape Plumbago is a stunning and versatile evergreen shrub that provides an exceptionally long season of clear, sky-blue flowers. From spring through fall, it produces continuous, rounded clusters of delicate, phlox-like blooms that seem to float above the mound of light green foliage. Its long, pliable stems allow it to be easily trained as a sprawling ground cover, a graceful cascade over walls, or a charming climber on a trellis or fence. Heat-loving, drought-tolerant, and trouble-free, it is a must-have for adding soft, cool color to sunny gardens.

Quick Facts

  • Foliage & Flowers: Glossy, bright green, oval to obovate leaves (1.5 in long) ; turn brilliant bronze-red to scarlet in fall ; vibrant gentian-blue, phlox-like flowers (½-¾ in wide) with five petals, produced in compact clusters from late summer to fall .
  • Mature Height: 6-12 inches .
  • Mature Spread: 12-24 inches .
  • Growth Rate: Fast spreading by rhizomes .
  • Hardiness Zones: USDA 5-9 .
  • Light Requirement: Full sun to partial shade; blooms best in sun .
  • Core Benefits: Long bloom season, vivid blue flowers, spectacular fall color, deer resistant, drought tolerant once established, erosion control, pollinator-friendly.
  • Best Uses: Groundcover, rock gardens, border edging, mass plantings, slopes for erosion control, underplanting shrubs, interplanting with spring bulbs, containers .

Faqs

Q: Is Dwarf Plumbago invasive?
A: It spreads moderately by rhizomes and can form dense colonies, which is desirable for a groundcover . While it can spread freely in ideal conditions , it is generally not considered aggressively invasive in managed gardens and is easy to control . Choose its location thoughtfully.

Q: How much sun does it need for best flowering?
A: For the most abundant flowers, plant in full sun to partial sun . It will bloom in partial shade but flowering may be reduced . The foliage color is also best in sunnier locations.

Q: When should I plant it with spring bulbs?
A: It is an excellent companion for spring bulbs because its foliage emerges late, just as bulb leaves are dying back . Plant bulbs in the same area; the Dwarf Plumbago will fill in to hide fading bulb foliage.

Q: How do I care for it in winter?
A: It is a herbaceous perennial that dies back to the ground in winter . In colder zones (5-6), apply a light mulch in late fall for winter protection . Cut back old stems in early spring before new growth emerges .
