Description

Dekopon Mandarin Tree, also known as Shiranui Citrus, is widely recognized as one of the best-tasting citrus varieties you can grow at home. In the U.S. market, this fruit is often known as “Sumo Citrus,” famous for its large size, easy peeling, and exceptional sweetness.

Originally developed in Japan, this premium mandarin produces large, seedless fruit with a distinctive top-knot shape. The flavor is rich, smooth, and intensely sweet, with very low acidity — making it one of the most enjoyable citrus fruits for fresh eating.

This is a grafted tree, selected for strong growth and reliable fruiting. Under good conditions, it can begin producing fruit within a few seasons and continue for many years.

Perfect for Bay Area climates, Dekopon Mandarin performs well in both in-ground planting and large containers.

Faqs

  • Q: Why is it called “Dekopon”?A: The name references both its large size and the distinctive top-knot on the fruit, reminiscent of a sumo wrestler’s hairstyle (chonmage).
  • Q: When does it ripen?A: Dekopon is a late-season variety, typically reaching its peak flavor from late winter into spring(approximately January through April), depending on the local climate.
  • Q: Is it difficult to grow?A: It has similar cultural requirements to most citrus (full sun, well-drained soil). Its reputation stems primarily from the high quality of its fruit rather than the tree being particularly difficult. It performs well in suitable Bay Area climates.
