Description

Red Buckwheat (Eriogonum grande var. rubescens), also known as San Miguel Island Buckwheat, is a beautiful California native perennial prized for its ruby-pink flowers and low, spreading foliage. Soft, spoon-shaped, gray-green leaves have a woolly texture and form an attractive mat close to the ground. From late spring through summer, slender upright stems carry rounded clusters of tiny, vibrant pink flowers that gradually fade to soft, rusty pink as they mature. These long-lasting blooms provide valuable nectar for butterflies, bees, and other pollinators, while the seeds support birds and wildlife. Naturally adapted to coastal conditions, this drought-tolerant plant is ideal for native gardens, rock gardens, slopes, and water-wise landscapes.
