Description

Charmer is a standout variety from the renowned Frostkiss Series . This exquisite evergreen perennial combines three species—Helleborus niger, H. lividus, and H. x sternii—to achieve its unique beauty: spectacular single flowers in a rich raspberry pink, intricately speckled with hundreds of tiny maroon dots for a captivating metallic sheen . The outward-facing blooms, adorned with a central tuft of creamy stamens, are held on sturdy dark red stems above a mound of leathery, very dark green leaves beautifully marbled with chartreuse . Flowering from late winter through mid-spring, this compact, clump-forming perennial brings vibrant color and sophisticated texture to shaded garden beds and containers.

Faqs

Q: When does 'Charmer' bloom, and how long do the flowers last?
A: It blooms from late winter through mid-spring (typically January to April) . Individual flowers are remarkably long-lasting, persisting for many weeks. The outward-facing blooms are held on sturdy dark red stems for optimal visibility .

Q: How should I care for it to ensure the best flower and foliage display?
A: In late winter (January to February), just as flower buds emerge, cut back all old, faded foliage to the ground . This removes winter-damaged leaves, improves air circulation, prevents foliar disease, and allows the fresh flowers and new marbled foliage to be seen clearly. Apply a mulch of well-rotted organic matter in autumn and a top-dressing of general fertilizer in spring .

Q: Can it be grown in containers?
A: Yes, it is an excellent container specimen . Use a deep pot with excellent drainage and a rich, well-draining potting mix. Container plants require more consistent moisture than those in the ground and benefit from winter protection in colder zones. They can also be brought indoors temporarily to enjoy the blooms .

Q: Is it toxic to pets or humans?
A: Yes, all parts of the plant are harmful if eaten and may irritate skin . Wear gloves when handling or pruning. This toxicity is also what makes it resistant to deer and rabbits.
