Description

Helleborus argutifolius, commonly known as Corsican Hellebore, is a bold, clump-forming evergreen perennial prized for its striking, leathery, sharply serrated foliage and its clusters of nodding, cup-shaped, lime-green flowers. Native to Corsica and Sardinia, this robust species forms a substantial architectural mound of large, divided, dark green leaves that provide year-round structure in the shade garden. From late winter through spring, it produces thick, sturdy stems bearing abundant clusters of pale lime-green to apple-green blooms that brighten the garden when little else is in flower. Exceptionally cold-hardy, shade-tolerant, deer and rabbit resistant, and remarkably drought-tolerant once established, it is an outstanding choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, containers, and winter-interest plantings.

Q: How large does it get?
A: It forms a substantial architectural clump, typically reaching 2-3 feet in both height and spread.

Q: How much sun does it need?
A: It thrives in partial shade to full shade. It tolerates morning sun but must be protected from hot afternoon sun, which can scorch the foliage.

Q: Is it deer resistant?
A: Yes, hellebores are generally resistant to deer and rabbits due to their toxic compounds.

Q: What makes the foliage unique?
A: The leaves are large, leathery, and sharply serrated, forming a bold, architectural mound that provides year-round structure and texture in the shade garden.

Q: How should I care for it?
A: In late winter, cut back any old, tattered foliage to make way for fresh new growth and to showcase the emerging flowers. Apply mulch in autumn and a general fertilizer in spring.

Q: Is it drought tolerant?
A: Yes, once established, it is remarkably drought tolerant, making it an excellent choice for dry shade gardens.
