Description

Hydrangea paniculata Pinky Winky is a spectacular, award-winning deciduous shrub prized for its exceptionally large, two-toned, cone-shaped flower clusters and its robust, upright habit. This vigorous selection forms a substantial mound of rich green, oval, pointed leaves with a heavy, substantial texture. From midsummer through autumn, it produces an abundance of massive, conical panicles that open white at the base and transition to a vibrant pink at the tip, creating a stunning, ever-changing pink-and-white gradient. The flowers persist well into fall, extending the season of interest. Exceptionally cold-hardy and easy to grow, it is an outstanding choice for borders, foundation plantings, specimen plantings, and cut flower gardens.

Faqs

Q: How large does Pinky Winky® Panicle Hydrangea get?
A: It is a substantial, upright shrub, typically reaching 6-8 feet in both height and spread at maturity.

Q: What makes the flowers unique?
A: The flowers are two-toned: the base of each cone-shaped panicle opens white and transitions to vibrant pink at the tip, creating a stunning pink-and-white gradient. The blooms are also exceptionally large and persist well into fall.

Q: When does it bloom?
A: It blooms from midsummer through autumn, with the flowers holding their color well into the fall season.

Q: How much sun does it need?
A: It performs best in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade is beneficial to prevent wilting.

Q: Is it cold hardy?
A: Yes, it is exceptionally cold-hardy, reliably surviving in USDA zones 4-9.

Q: Does it need pruning?
A: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. It blooms on new wood, so pruning at this time will not sacrifice flowers. Cut back by about one-third to maintain shape and encourage vigorous flowering.
