Description

Olea europaea 'Koroneiki' is a highly prized, early-bearing olive cultivar native to Greece, celebrated globally for its exceptional oil quality, high and consistent productivity, and adaptability to various climates and soil conditions . This vigorous, medium-sized evergreen tree forms a rounded canopy with a characteristically spreading growth habit and sparse density, making it well-suited for both traditional and modern high-density hedgerow plantations . It is known for its small, elliptical-lanceolate leaves and produces small fruit that, although low in individual weight, are remarkably rich in oil with a very high oleic acid content and excellent stability . While it shows moderate resistance to leaf spot and verticillium wilt, it is very susceptible to olive knot, requiring careful monitoring . Distinguished by its self-fertility and early flowering, it comes into bearing early, producing small but abundant fruit .

Faqs

Q: How long does it take for a Koroneiki olive tree to bear fruit?
A: This cultivar is known for coming into bearing early. Under good conditions, it can begin producing fruit within 2 to 4 years after planting [citation:user].

Q: Is the Koroneiki olive tree self-fertile, or does it need a pollinator?
A: It is considered self-fertile and has been shown to set fruit through self-pollination . However, for maximum yield and optimal fruit development, planting a compatible pollinator (such as 'Arbequina' or 'Sikitita') is often recommended .

Q: Is it a good tree for oil or for table olives?
A: The 'Koroneiki' cultivar is almost exclusively grown for olive oil production . Its fruit is small and has a low flesh-to-pit ratio, making it less suitable for table olives, but its oil is highly valued for its superior quality and high oleic acid content.

Q: What are its main disease and climate vulnerabilities?
A: While it is a hardy variety tolerant of drought and varying soil conditions, 'Koroneiki' is sensitive to cold and very susceptible to olive knot disease . It has moderate tolerance to salinity and moderate resistance to verticillium wilt and olive fly .
