Description

Leymus condensatus 'Canyon Prince' is a striking, evergreen perennial grass prized for its bold, architectural form and dramatic, silver-blue foliage. Native to California's Channel Islands, this robust, clumping grass (spreading by rhizomes) forms an open, fountain-like mound of stiff, upright to arching, broad, silvery-blue to icy blue leaves that provide year-round color and texture. In summer, it produces tall, sturdy flower spikes (1-2 ft above the foliage) bearing buff to tan, wheat-like seed heads that add vertical interest and attract birds. Exceptionally drought-tolerant once established, heat tolerant, and adaptable to a range of well-drained soils (including coastal conditions), it is an outstanding choice for xeriscape gardens, erosion control on slopes, mass plantings, coastal gardens, and as a dramatic focal point in water-wise landscapes. Note: This grass spreads vigorously by rhizomes; containment may be necessary in smaller gardens.

Faqs

Q: How large does Canyon Prince Lyme Grass get?
A: It forms an open, fountain-like clump, typically reaching 3-5 feet in both height and spread (plus 1-2 ft tall flower spikes in summer).

Q: Does it spread aggressively?
A: Yes, it spreads vigorously by underground rhizomes and can form large colonies. In smaller gardens, containment (such as root barriers or planting in large containers) is recommended. Its spreading nature is excellent for erosion control on slopes.

Q: Is it drought tolerant?
A: Yes, once established, it is drought tolerant. Occasional spring/summer water improves appearance, especially in hotter inland areas, but little to no supplemental water is needed once established.

Q: How much sun does it need for the best silver-blue color?
A: For the most intense silvery-blue foliage, plant in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily). In partial shade, the color will be greener.
