Description

Blue Lily Turf is a tough, versatile perennial that serves as a reliable, grass-like groundcover for challenging shady areas. It forms dense, arching clumps of deep green, strap-shaped leaves that remain evergreen. In late summer, it sends up sturdy spikes adorned with clusters of small, violet-blue flowers that resemble grape hyacinths, followed by attractive black berries. Extremely adaptable to drought, poor soil, and root competition, it is a go-to solution for edging pathways, suppressing weeds on slopes, or adding low-maintenance structure under trees.

  • Dense, Evergreen Foliage: Forms robust, grass-like clumps of glossy, dark green leaves that provide year-round coverage and texture.

  • Late Summer Violet-Blue Flowers: Produces showy, upright spikes of small, bell-shaped violet-blue flowers, a valuable late-season nectar source.

  • Extremely Tough & Adaptable: Tolerates deep shade, drought, heat, humidity, and poor soil once established. Also handles root competition from trees.

  • Excellent Erosion Control & Edging: Its mat-forming roots stabilize soil on slopes, and its neat growth habit makes it perfect for defining garden beds and walkways.

  • Low-Maintenance & Deer Resistant: Requires no care beyond an optional mowing or shearing in late winter to remove old foliage. Deer generally avoid it.

Faqs

Q: Should it be cut back?
A: Yes, for a tidy appearance, cut or mow the entire planting back to 2-3 inches high in late winter before new spring growth begins. This removes old, tattered leaves and makes way for fresh foliage. If left uncut, it will simply grow through the old leaves.

Q: Is it invasive?
A: It spreads by short rhizomes to form a solid mass but is generally not considered invasive. It is easily contained by occasional edging and is far less aggressive than its cousin, Liriope spicata.
