Description

The Midnight Valencia Orange is a premium selection of the classic Valencia, prized for producing virtually seedless, exceptionally sweet fruit that ripens earlier in the season. Originating as a mutation in South Africa in the 1920s, this refined cultivar is the variety behind the famous orange juice served at Starbucks . It features a vigorous, upright tree with large, glossy, almost grapefruit-like leaves and fragrant white blossoms . The fruit is medium to large, with a smooth, bright orange rind and incredibly juicy, low-acid flesh that makes it the gold standard for home-squeezed juice, as well as being delightful for fresh eating .

Faqs

Q: Is the Midnight Valencia Orange seedless?
A: Yes, it is prized for being virtually seedless. The fruit typically contains 0-3 seeds, which is a major improvement over the seedy standard Valencia .

Q: Is this the variety used by Starbucks for their orange juice?
A: Yes, the Midnight Valencia is widely recognized as the proprietary variety used by Starbucks for its fresh, chilled orange juice, prized for its sweet flavor and lack of bitterness .

Q: When is the fruit ready to harvest?
A: The Midnight Valencia is a mid-to-late season orange. It typically ripens from late winter through summer (March to July) , maturing 20-30 days earlier than standard Valencias .

Q: How cold hardy is this tree?
A: It is hardy to about 26-28°F (-3 to -2°C) . Mature trees can survive brief dips, but young trees are sensitive to frost. It is more cold-sensitive than a standard Valencia and must be protected in zones 8 and below .

Q: Can I grow it in a pot?
A: Absolutely. It is considered an excellent variety for container growing, especially on dwarfing rootstocks like Flying Dragon . A container allows you to move the tree indoors to a sunny location for winter protection in colder climates.
