Description

Muehlenbeckia complexa is a charming, fast-growing deciduous climber or ground cover prized for its dense, wiry, intertwined stems and delicate, tiny, bright green leaves. Native to New Zealand, this vigorous, twining vine forms a tangled, billowy mass of slender, bronze-brown stems adorned with small, rounded to heart-shaped, glossy leaves. In summer, it produces tiny, inconspicuous, greenish-white flowers, followed by small, fleshy, white fruits with black seeds. Exceptionally adaptable, it thrives in full sun to partial shade, tolerates a range of soils, and can be trained as a climber, used as a ground cover, or shaped as a topiary. Its intricate, lacy texture makes it an outstanding choice for indoor hanging baskets, terrariums, bonsai, and as a living screen or erosion control in outdoor landscapes.

Faqs

Q: How much light does Angel Vine need indoors?
A: It thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon sun, which may scorch the leaves. It can also adapt to lower light conditions, though growth may slow.

Q: How often should I water it?
A: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. It prefers consistently moist but not waterlogged soil. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows. It is somewhat drought tolerant but looks best with regular moisture.

Q: How fast does it grow?
A: It is a fast-growing plant, especially outdoors in ideal conditions. Indoors, growth is moderate but can still be vigorous with proper light and water.

Q: Can it be grown as a ground cover outdoors?
A: Yes, outdoors in USDA zones 7-10, it can be used as a fast-spreading ground cover, forming a dense, billowy mat that suppresses weeds and stabilizes soil. It can be invasive in some regions; check local guidelines.

Q: Does it need support to climb?
A: It will climb by twining around supports. Provide a trellis, wire, or other structure for vertical growth. Without support, it will trail and spread as a ground cover or cascade from a hanging basket.
