Description

Mountain Fire Japanese Andromeda is a dramatic and popular cultivar named for its spectacular spring foliage. The new leaves emerge a brilliant, intense scarlet-red, creating a "mountain fire" effect that lasts for several weeks before maturing to a deep, glossy green. In early spring, it produces profuse chains of white or pink-tinged flowers. Its bold color and elegant, layered habit make it a superb focal point for shaded areas.

  • Fiery Red New Growth: The standout feature—new spring foliage is a vibrant, long-lasting scarlet-red.

  • Profuse Early Spring Blooms: Bears abundant, dangling clusters of white flowers, often tinged with pink.

  • Attractive Layered Habit: Develops a graceful, upright form with tiered branching.

  • Requires Acidic Soil & Shade: Essential needs are acidic, organic, well-drained soil and partial to full shade.

  • Excellent Specimen Shrub: Its seasonal drama makes it perfect as a standalone accent in a woodland setting or shaded border.

Faqs

Q: How long does the red color last?
A: The intense red color on new growth can last for 4-6 weeks in spring before gradually transitioning to dark green. The display is most vibrant in cooler spring weather.

Q: Can it be grown in a container?
A: Yes, very successfully. Container growing allows for perfect control over soil acidity. Use a large pot with ericaceous (acidic) potting mix. It's an excellent way to enjoy this plant on a shaded patio.
