Description

Japanese Tassel Fern (Polystichum polyblepharum) is one of the most elegant evergreen ferns available for shaded landscapes. Native to Japan, this fern is especially admired for its unique spring growth, when new fronds emerge in tightly curled, tassel-like forms before slowly unfurling into graceful, arching foliage.

Unlike many common ferns, Japanese Tassel Fern offers a structured, polished appearance year-round, making it a favorite choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and modern Asian-inspired landscapes. Its thick, glossy leaves hold their shape well and provide a lush, refined texture even in deep shade.

This fern thrives in cool, protected locations with consistent moisture, and once established, it requires minimal maintenance. It pairs beautifully with hostas, hellebores, camellias, and other shade-loving plants commonly used in Bay Area gardens.

Why gardeners choose Japanese Tassel Fern:

Elegant tassel-shaped new growth in spring
Evergreen foliage for year-round structure
Excellent performance in full shade
Low maintenance once established
Ideal for woodland, Japanese, and shaded garden designs
