Faqs

Is Purple Fan Flower a perennial in California?
In many mild California areas it can behave like a tender perennial, but it’s often treated as a warm-season annual. Protect it from freezing nights.

Does Scaevola need deadheading?
Usually not. Most fan flowers are self-cleaning and keep blooming without removing spent flowers.

How much sun does it need?
Full sun is best for heavy flowering. In hotter inland exposures, part sun can help it look fresher.

Can I grow it in a hanging basket?
Yes. It’s one of the best trailing bloomers for baskets and container edges.

How often should I water it?
Water consistently while it’s establishing. Once established, let the soil dry slightly between waterings. In containers, watering is needed more often during heat.

Is it drought tolerant?
Yes after it’s established, especially in the ground. Container plants still need regular watering.

Will it handle coastal wind and salt air?
It can do well near the coast if drainage is excellent and it’s not kept overly wet.

Does it attract pollinators?
Yes, the flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies.
