Description

Semponium 'Vortex' is a groundbreaking, award-winning hybrid succulent—a remarkable intergeneric cross between Sempervivum and Aeonium—that combines the best traits of both parents. This stunning plant forms a large, dramatic rosette of thick, fleshy, deep burgundy-red to near-black leaves with a glossy, almost lacquered finish. The color intensifies in bright sunlight and cooler temperatures, creating a spectacular, swirling effect. Exceptionally vigorous, drought-tolerant, and more heat-tolerant than its Sempervivum parent, it is an outstanding choice for containers, rock gardens, succulent gardens, and xeriscape landscapes, where its bold, architectural form and rich coloration provide dramatic year-round interest.

Faqs

Q: How large does Vortex Semponium get?
A: It forms a large, architectural rosette, typically reaching 8-12 inches in height and 10-16 inches in spread at maturity.

Q: What is a Semponium?
A: It is an intergeneric hybrid between Sempervivum (hens and chicks) and Aeonium. This cross combines the cold hardiness and clumping habit of Sempervivum with the larger size and glossy foliage of Aeonium.

Q: How much sun does it need for the best color?
A: For the most intense, near-black coloration, provide full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily). In partial shade, the color may be less dramatic.

Q: Is it drought tolerant?
A: Yes, once established, it is highly drought tolerant. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure.

Q: Is it cold hardy?
A: It is reliably hardy in USDA zones 8-10, tolerating temperatures down to approximately 20°F (-6°C) with protection. In colder zones, grow it in a container and overwinter indoors.

Q: Can it be grown in containers?
A: Yes, its dramatic, architectural form and rich coloration make it an outstanding choice for containers on patios and entryways.

Q: Does it produce offsets?
A: Yes, it forms offsets ("pups") around the base, which can be left to form attractive colonies or removed and replanted.

Q: How do I propagate it?
A: Propagate by removing offsets ("pups") in spring or summer, allowing them to callous for a few days, then planting in well-draining soil.
