Description

Potato Vine is a prolific and fast-growing evergreen (or semi-evergreen in cooler areas) climber, celebrated for its almost constant display of cheerful, star-shaped white flowers. From spring through fall, and often year-round in mild climates, it produces generous clusters of white blooms with tiny, contrasting yellow centers, resembling a cloud of jasmine. Its slender, twining stems and glossy, dark green leaves quickly cover fences, arbors, and trellises with a lush, green curtain. While beautiful and easy to grow, it is important to note that all parts of this plant are poisonous if ingested.

  • Prolific Starry White Blooms: Flowers continuously from spring to fall, producing abundant clusters of small, white, star-shaped flowers with yellow centers for a long season of interest.

  • Very Fast-Growing & Vigorous: A rapid climber that can quickly reach 20-30 ft., ideal for providing quick coverage on large trellises, fences, or pergolas.

  • Evergreen in Mild Climates: Maintains its glossy, lance-shaped foliage year-round in zones 9 and above, providing permanent screening.

  • Heat Tolerant & Deer Resistant: Thrives in full sun and hot conditions, and is typically left alone by deer.

  • Important Safety Note: All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, containing solanine. It should be planted away from areas frequented by children or pets that may chew on plants.

Faqs

Q: Is it related to edible potatoes?
A: Yes, it is in the same genus (Solanum) as the potato (Solanum tuberosum) and tomato, but it is not edible. Like many plants in the nightshade family, it contains toxic alkaloids.

Q: How do I control its vigorous growth?
A: It responds well to pruning. You can prune it hard in late winter or early spring to control its size and shape. Regular tip-pruning throughout the growing season will encourage bushier growth and even more flowers. Wear gloves when handling, as the sap may irritate skin.
