Description

Teucrium chamaedrys (often sold as Teucrium x lucidrys) is a classic, low-growing evergreen sub-shrub prized for its glossy, dark green, aromatic foliage and profuse pinkish-purple summer flowers. Native to Europe and the Mediterranean, this tidy, clump-forming plant features small, oval, scalloped, opposite leaves that resemble miniature oak leaves and release a pleasant, herbaceous scent when brushed. From late spring through midsummer, it produces short spikes of small, two-lipped, tubular flowers in shades of rosy-purple, magenta-pink, or lavender, which are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. With its dense, upright, compact habit, excellent drought tolerance, and ability to thrive in poor, well-drained soils, it is a traditional choice for knot gardens, parterres, low hedges, border edging, herb gardens, rock gardens, and ground cover.

Faqs

Q: How large does Wall Germander get?
A: It is a low, tidy shrub, typically reaching 8-12 inches in height and spreading 1-2 feet wide. It can be pruned to maintain a tight, compact shape.

Q: How much sun does it need for the best growth and flowering?
A: For the most compact growth, densest foliage, and abundant flowers, plant in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily). It will tolerate very light shade but may become more open and less floriferous.

Q: Is Wall Germander a good choice for a low hedge?
A: Yes, it is a traditional and excellent choice for a low, formal, or informal hedge. Plant 6-12 inches apart for a dense, clipped hedge that stays neat and tidy with regular shearing.

Q: How much water does it need?
A: Once established, it is drought-tolerant. Water regularly during its first year to establish a deep root system. After that, it requires little to no supplemental water. It thrives in well-drained soils and will not tolerate wet feet.

Q: When should I prune it?
A: For a formal hedge or tidy shape, prune lightly in early spring to shape and again after floweringin midsummer to encourage dense growth. Avoid cutting into old, woody stems, as they may not resprout.

Q: Does it attract pollinators?
A: Yes, the small, rosy-purple flowers are attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators.
