Description

Thymus pseudolanuginosus 'Woolly' is a unique, evergreen ground cover prized for its exceptionally soft, fuzzy, silver-gray foliage and dense, mat-forming habit. Unlike many culinary thymes, this ornamental variety is grown primarily for its textural beauty rather than its flavor or fragrance. It forms a low, creeping carpet of tiny, oval, gray-green leaves densely covered in fine white hairs, giving the plant a soft, woolly, almost velvety appearance. In early to mid-summer, it produces clusters of small, two-lipped, tubular, soft pink flowers that rise just above the foliage, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. With excellent tolerance for light foot traffic, drought, poor soils, and deer, it is an outstanding choice for between stepping stones, rock gardens, slopes, as a lawn alternative, and spilling over walls in sunny, well-drained locations.

Faqs

Q: Is Woolly Thyme edible or fragrant?
A: Unlike culinary thymes, Woolly Thyme is grown primarily for its ornamental texture and appearance. It has a very mild scent and is not typically used for cooking due to its fuzzy texture and subtle flavor.

Q: How is it different from other creeping thymes?
A: It is distinguished by its soft, woolly, silver-gray foliage (from fine white hairs) and very low, dense, mat-forming habit. It does not have the strong fragrance or culinary uses of Lemon Thyme or Red Creeping Thyme.

Q: How much sun does it need?
A: For the densest growth and most compact form, plant in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily). In partial shade, it becomes less dense and more open.

Q: Can it tolerate foot traffic?
A: Yes, it can tolerate light, occasional foot traffic, making it perfect for planting between stepping stones or as a low-maintenance lawn alternative.

Q: How much water does it need?
A: Once established, it is drought tolerant. Water regularly during its first year, then little to no supplemental water is needed. It thrives in well-drained soils and will not tolerate wet feet.
