Description

The Allee Chinese Elm (also known as ‘Lacebark Elm’ or ‘Emerll II’) is a statuesque, fast-growing shade tree with the classic, graceful vase shape of the American Elm but with superior disease resistance. Its attractive mottled bark, vibrant fall color, and adaptability to tough urban conditions make it an outstanding choice for parks, wide streets, and large properties seeking a majestic, low-maintenance canopy.

  • Develops a tall, strongly upright, and broad vase-shaped canopy, creating a classic, elegant silhouette reminiscent of the American Elm.

  • Highly resistant to Dutch elm disease, elm leaf beetle, and powdery mildew, ensuring long-term health and beauty with minimal intervention.

  • Features beautiful exfoliating bark that reveals a mosaic of gray, green, orange, and brown, providing exceptional winter interest.

  • Exhibits excellent heat and drought tolerance once established, thriving in the full sun and dry summers of the Bay Area with occasional deep watering.

  • Grows rapidly to provide quick shade, and its leaves decompose quickly in fall, making for relatively easy cleanup.

Faqs

Q: How does it compare to the American Elm?
A: It is virtually identical in form but is highly resistant to Dutch elm disease, which devastated the American Elm population. It is a superior, reliable replacement for that iconic look.

Q: Is it a messy tree with seeds?
A: It produces small, papery samara (winged) seeds in fall. While not overly messy, some clean-up may be needed. For a seedless option, consider the ‘Emerald Sunshine®’ variety.

Q: What’s the best use for it in landscaping?
A: Due to its large ultimate size (50 ft tall, 30 ft wide), it is ideal as a park or lawn specimen, a shade tree for large properties, or a street tree on wide boulevards. It needs space to develop its full, majestic form.
