Description

Spineless Giant Yucca is a bold, architectural plant that adds a dramatic tropical or desert accent to landscapes and interiors. Unlike many yuccas, its long, sword-shaped leaves are flexible and lack sharp spines, making it much safer for high-traffic areas. It develops a thick, woody trunk that resembles an elephant's foot as it matures. In spring and summer, mature plants may send up towering spikes of fragrant, bell-shaped white flowers. Fast-growing and incredibly adaptable, it is popular as a dramatic landscape specimen in frost-free areas and as a striking, low-maintenance houseplant.

  • Dramatic, Spineless Foliage: Features long, arching, sword-like leaves that are deep green, pliable, and lack the dangerous sharp tips of many yuccas.

  • Stout, Sculptural Trunk: Develops a thick, cane-like trunk that becomes textured and elephant-skin-like with age, adding significant sculptural interest.

  • Fast-Growing & Adaptable: Grows relatively quickly for a yucca. Outdoors, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soil; indoors, it tolerates a wide range of light conditions.

  • Low-Maintenance & Drought Tolerant: Once established, it requires minimal watering and care. It is highly resistant to pests and diseases.

  • Versatile Indoor/Outdoor Specimen: A superb focal point for modern, drought-tolerant gardens in Zone 9b-11, and a classic, easy-care architectural houseplant.

Faqs

Q: Can it be grown indoors?
A: Yes, it is one of the most popular yucca species for indoor use. It adapts well to indoor light (bright, indirect is best) and tolerates dry air. Growth will be slower, and it is very unlikely to flower indoors.

Q: How cold hardy is it?
A: It is the least cold-hardy common yucca, tolerating only brief dips to about 28-30°F (-2 to -1°C). In Zone 9a, it needs a very warm, protected microclimate or should be grown in a container that can be moved indoors during freezing weather.
