Description

The Village Green Zelkova is a superb, disease-resistant alternative to the American Elm, prized for its rapid growth and classic vase-shaped form. It develops a majestic, spreading canopy that provides excellent shade, while its attractive exfoliating bark and rusty-red fall color add multi-season interest. It's a tough, adaptable, and reliable choice for streets, parks, and large lawns throughout the Bay Area.

  • Grows rapidly into a large, stately tree with a classic, upright, vase-shaped (fan-shaped) crown, reminiscent of the beloved American Elm.

  • Highly resistant to Dutch elm disease and elm leaf beetle, making it a vital and reliable replacement for disease-prone elms in the landscape.

  • Exhibits excellent urban tolerance, withstanding wind, drought (once established), heat, and air pollution.

  • Provides attractive fall color in shades of rusty red to reddish-brown, and develops an interesting patchwork of gray, brown, and orange bark as it matures.

  • Its strong structure and adaptability make it a premier choice for a fast-growing shade tree that requires minimal care.

Faqs

Q: How wide does it get? Is it suitable for a residential street?
A: It can become very wide (equal to its height of 40-80 ft). It is an excellent street tree for wide parkways but is generally too large for standard residential lots or narrow streets. Ensure there is ample overhead and lateral space.

Q: How does its drought tolerance compare to a California native?
A: It has good drought tolerance for a non-native large tree, but not as extreme as a true California native like the Valley Oak or California Sycamore. It benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods, especially when young.

Q: Does it have significant pest issues?
A: It is largely trouble-free. Its main advantage is resistance to the major pests that afflict elms. It may occasionally host aphids or gall mites, but these rarely affect the tree's health.
