Description

The Sugar Maple is the legendary king of autumn, producing the iconic, brilliant mosaic of red, orange, and yellow foliage that defines the season in northeastern forests. It is also the primary source of maple syrup. This large, slow-growing legacy tree requires ample space, cool roots, and specific soil conditions to thrive, making it a tree for dedicated gardeners with suitable land.

  • Famous for its unsurpassed, vibrant fall coloration in shades of scarlet, orange, and gold.

  • The commercial source of maple syrup; sap can be tapped from mature trees.

  • A large, slow-growing, long-lived legacy tree that develops a majestic, rounded form.

  • Demanding in cultivation: Requires deep, well-drained, slightly acidic soil, consistent moisture, and protection from heat, drought, and road salt. Not well-suited to most Bay Area climatesexcept possibly the coolest coastal fog belts.

Faqs

Q: Can I grow it in the Bay Area?A:It isnot recommended for most of the Bay Area. It requires cool summer temperatures, consistent moisture, and acidic soil—conditions rarely found outside of specific coastal microclimates (Sunset zones 15-17). It will struggle and be prone to stress and disease in hot, dry inland valleys.
