Pacific Sunset® Maple is a handsome, medium-sized hybrid maple with a dense, rounded crown. It is noted for its good drought tolerance (better than many red maples) and its showy fall color that mixes red, orange, and yellow hues. It’s an excellent street or yard tree for smaller spaces.

Exhibits better heat and drought tolerance than many Acer rubrum cultivars, making it a smart choice for drier Bay Area gardens.

Q: Is it a good alternative to the overplanted Autumn Blaze® Maple?
A: Yes, it is often considered a superior alternative. While both are hybrids, Pacific Sunset Maple typically offers a more symmetrical, rounded form, better branch structure (less prone to included bark and breakage), and comparable or superior brilliant orange-red fall color. It may also be slightly more tolerant of alkaline soils.

Q: Does it have invasive roots or seed problems?
A: No. As a cultivated hybrid (primarily Acer truncatum parentage), it is sterile and does not produce the abundant, messy "helicopter" seeds that plague Norway and some other maple species. Its root system is typical for a tree of its size and is not known to be particularly invasive or damaging to sidewalks compared to some species, especially if given adequate soil space.
