Description

Dr. Hurd Manzanita (Arctostaphylos manzanita 'Dr. Hurd') is a striking evergreen California native selection prized for its smooth mahogany-red bark, sculptural branching, and glossy light green foliage. This large, upright shrub can develop into a graceful multi-trunked small tree, creating an elegant focal point throughout the year. Clusters of delicate white to pale pink, bell-shaped flowers appear in winter to early spring, providing nectar for hummingbirds and bees. Its naturally open form beautifully displays the twisting red branches. Adaptable to sunny or lightly shaded locations, Dr. Hurd tolerates occasional summer irrigation but requires good drainage. Once established, it is an excellent low-water choice for California native gardens and naturalistic landscapes.
