Description

Alaska Azalea is a vigorous, upright evergreen shrub prized for its clean, crisp display of pure white flowers with a faint greenish-yellow flare. It blooms heavily in mid to late spring, creating a luminous, "snowy" effect that brightens shady areas. Its large size and robust growth make it an excellent choice for creating a tall, white flowering screen or a substantial background plant in woodland gardens.

  • Pure White Spring Blooms: Bears masses of clear white flowers with a subtle green-yellow blotch, providing a bright, clean contrast.

  • Vigorous & Tall Habit: Grows larger than many azaleas, forming a substantial, rounded shrub 4-6 feet tall and wide.

  • Excellent for Screening: Its size and density make it suitable for use as an informal flowering hedge or privacy screen in partial shade.

  • Brightens Deep Shade: The white flowers are particularly effective at lighting up dark corners of the garden.

  • Cold Hardy: As the name suggests, it has good cold tolerance, but also thrives in Zone 9a with adequate shade and moisture.

  • Landscape Uses:Excellent for woodland understories, shaded borders, foundation plantings, and spacious patio containers. Ideal as a low-maintenance evergreen accent.

Faqs

Q: Can it tolerate any sun?
A: In Zone 9a, it should be planted in partial to full shade, ideally with protection from hot afternoon sun. Morning sun is acceptable. Full sun will scorch the leaves and flowers.

Q: How does it compare to 'Snow' azalea?
A: 'Alaska' is typically larger in plant size and has single flowers with a green flare. 'Snow' is more compact and has double white flowers. Both are excellent white-blooming choices.
