Description

Golden Bamboo is the classic, fast-growing bamboo known for its bright golden-yellow canes and lush green foliage. It creates a rapidly spreading screen. CRITICAL NOTE: This is a RUNNING bamboo with highly invasive roots. It must be planted with a professional-grade root barrier or in a fully contained planter to prevent it from taking over your garden and neighboring properties.

  • Forms a dense screen of green leaves on attractive golden-yellow culms (canes) that provide year-round color and visual interest.

  • Grows extremely rapidly both in height and by spreading underground rhizomes.

  • Major Consideration: Highly invasive running habit. Uncontrolled, it can spread many feet per year. Responsible planting with containment is mandatory.

  • Tolerates a wide range of conditions and is drought-tolerant once established.

Faqs

Q: How do I prevent it from spreading uncontrollably?
A: You must install a professional-grade bamboo root barrier (HDPE plastic, 30-40 mil thick, at least 28-30 inches deep) in a continuous ring around the planting area before planting. Alternatively, grow it only in above-ground containers or fully enclosed planters with no drainage holes to the ground.

Q: Can I plant it near my property line?
A: Not recommended unless with a properly installed and maintained root barrier. Even with a barrier, it’s safest to plant it well within your property to monitor and control any escape attempts. Legal disputes over bamboo encroachment are common.
