Description

Debutante Camellia is a beloved, old-fashioned variety cherished for its profusion of medium-sized, bright pink, peony-form double flowers. It is one of the earliest C. japonica types to bloom, often starting in late fall or early winter. The flowers are a cheerful rose-pink and cover the plant densely. Its vigorous, spreading habit makes it excellent for informal hedges, screens, or as a large, mounding specimen. A true garden heirloom.

  • Prolific Early Winter Bloomer: One of the earliest japonicas to flower, providing color from November/December through winter.

  • Abundant Peony-Form Pink Flowers: Produces masses of cheerful, bright pink, double blooms with a loose, full form.

  • Vigorous, Spreading Habit: Grows with a broad, arching form, wider than it is tall, perfect for filling space.

  • Excellent for Informal Hedging: Its dense growth and prolific flowering make a stunning, colorful screen.

  • Historic & Reliable: A time-tested performer that has been a garden favorite for over a century.

Faqs

Q: How early does it really bloom?
A: In Zone 9a, it can often begin flowering in November or December and continue through February, making it a valuable source of winter color.

Q: Can it handle more sun due to its early bloom?
A: Its early bloom means flowers can be susceptible to frost damage. It still prefers partial shade; morning sun with afternoon shade helps protect both winter blooms and foliage from summer scorch.
