Red Sister Cordyline is a classic and wildly popular tropical shrub, celebrated for its explosively colorful foliage. Its broad, arching leaves emerge a brilliant hot pink, maturing through shades of deep rose and burgundy to a dark greenish-bronze, often with all colors present on the plant at once. This creates a vibrant, multi-hued display. Fast-growing and lush, it forms a dense, rounded clump that brings maximum tropical impact to shaded courtyards, poolside plantings, or as a stunning indoor specimen.

  • Explosion of Pink, Red & Burgundy: New growth is a vibrant pink, creating a constantly renewed display of color as leaves age through red to deep burgundy.

  • Fast-Growing & Lush Tropical Habit: Quickly forms a full, multi-stemmed clump of broad, glossy leaves, providing immediate impact and volume.

  • Prefers Bright Shade: Thrives in filtered sunlight or partial shade. Direct hot sun can scorch the leaves and fade the brilliant colors.

  • Moderate Water Needs: Appreciates more consistent moisture and humidity than some other cordylines, making it ideal for tropical-style garden beds.

  • Iconic Tropical Accent: The quintessential plant for creating a resort-like feel around patios, in atriums, or as a bold container centerpiece for a shaded deck.

Knowing how we measure the size?

Knowing how we measure the size?

When browsing our plants, you may notice size terms such as Gallon, Multi, or Stand. These describe how a plant is grown, containerized, or structured at the time of sale — not just its height. Understanding these terms will help you choose the right plant for your space and expectations.

🌱 Gallon Size (Container Size)

Gallon refers to the size of the nursery container the plant is currently growing in (e.g. 1 Gallon, 5 Gallon, 15 Gallon).

  • A larger gallon size generally means:

    • A more established root system

    • A sturdier plant

    • Faster visual impact after planting

  • Example:

    • 5 Gallon: Ideal for residential gardens, easy to handle, good balance of value and maturity

    • 15 Gallon: More mature, provides quicker results in the landscape

Note: Gallon size does not guarantee a specific height, as growth varies by species.

🌳 Multi (Multi-Trunk / Multi-Branch Form)

Multi indicates the plant has multiple trunks or main stems growing from the base.

  • Commonly used for:

    • Ornamental trees

    • Feature plants

    • Japanese maples, olives, crepe myrtles, etc.

  • Why choose Multi:

    • Fuller, more sculptural appearance

    • Strong visual presence even at younger ages

    • Popular for design-focused landscapes

🌲 Stand (Single-Trunk / Standard Form)

Stand (short for Standard) refers to a single, dominant trunk with a raised or naturally formed canopy.

  • Commonly used for:

    • Shade trees

    • Street trees

    • Orchard and structural plantings

  • Why choose Stand:

    • Clean, classic tree form

    • Easier clearance for walkways and lawns

    • Preferred for long-term structure and uniformity

🌿 Choosing the Right Size

  • If you want instant impact → larger Gallon, Multi form

  • If you want long-term structure → Stand form

  • If you want flexibility and value → mid-size Gallon containers

If you’re unsure which size or form fits your project, our team is happy to help you select the best option based on your space, timeline, and design goals.

FAQs

Q: Why are the leaves on my 'Red Sister' turning green?
A: This is natural maturation. The new leaves emerge pink/red and gradually turn darker, eventually to green or bronze as they age. To maintain the most colorful display, ensure the plant is healthy and producing new growth. Too much deep shade can also result in less vibrant new growth.

Q: Is it indoor or outdoor?
A: It excels in both roles! Outdoors in frost-free climates (Zone 10-11), it's a landscape staple. In Zone 9a, it's best in containers that can be moved indoors in winter. It is also one of the best and most colorful tropical foliage plants for bright indoor spaces.
