Size, shape and branching naturally vary

Description

The Leyland Cypress is the world's most famous fast-growing evergreen screen. This vigorous hybrid forms a dense, soft-textured wall of gray-green foliage, growing several feet per year. It excels at quickly creating tall, thick privacy hedges and windbreaks. However, its rapid growth, large ultimate size, and susceptibility to certain diseases require careful siting and commitment to maintenance, making it best for large properties where it has room to breathe.

  • Extremely fast-growing (3-4+ feet per year), ideal for quick screening.

  • Forms a dense, columnar to pyramidal shape with soft, feathery, gray-green to blue-green foliage.

  • Can be sheared into a formal hedge or left to grow more naturally.

  • Shallow roots make it susceptible to drought stress, windthrow, and canker diseases (especially Seiridium and Botryosphaeria) in humid or stressed conditions.

  • Grows very large (60-70 ft tall, 15-20 ft wide) and is not for small yards.

  • A high-performance but high-maintenance screening plant that needs space and monitoring.

Faqs

Q: What are the main problems with Leyland Cypress?
A: 1) Canker Diseases: Fungal diseases that kill branches, often fatal in the Southeast USA. 2) Size:It outgrows most residential lots. 3) Shallow Roots: Prone to blowing over in storms and competing with nearby plants. 4) Boring: Its ubiquity can lack landscape interest.

Q: Can I keep it as a 10-foot hedge?
A: Technically yes, but it's a constant battle. You must shear it multiple times per year to keep such a vigorous giant at a small size. This is labor-intensive and can lead to a brown, woody interior if not done correctly. It is better to choose a naturally smaller plant for a low hedge.
