Description

The Hardy Ice Plant is a spectacular, low-growing succulent ground cover celebrated for its profuse, neon-bright flowers and exceptional toughness. This evergreen perennial forms a dense mat of slender, fleshy, bright green leaves that remain attractive year-round. From late spring through fall, and often until the first hard frost, it is almost completely covered with a dazzling display of shimmering, daisy-like flowers in a vibrant magenta-pink to reddish-purple . Each flower opens in full sun, creating a carpet of intense, jewel-tone color. Extremely drought-tolerant, cold-hardy, and low-maintenance, it is a superb choice for adding long-lasting color to rock gardens, slopes, borders, and containers.

Faqs

Q: Does the Hardy Ice Plant stay evergreen in winter?
A: It is evergreen in mild winters, retaining its fleshy green foliage year-round. In colder zones (USDA 5-7), the foliage may die back or become semi-evergreen, but it reliably returns from the roots in spring .

Q: How much water does it need?
A: Very little once established. It is a succulent and highly drought-tolerant. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering, especially in winter, is the most common cause of failure .

Q: How do I keep it blooming so profusely?
A: The keys are full sun and good drainage. It needs at least 6 hours of direct sun daily for the best flower display. It requires no deadheading or special care. If it becomes leggy, a light shearing after the main bloom flush can encourage denser growth .

Q: Can it be grown in containers?
A: Absolutely. It is an outstanding choice for containers, hanging baskets, and green roofs, where its trailing habit and long bloom time can be appreciated up close . Use a well-draining potting mix suitable for cacti and succulents.

Q: Is it truly hardy in zone 5?
A: Yes, it is reliably hardy to USDA zone 5. It has proven to be one of the most cold-tolerant ice plants, surviving winters with temperatures well below zero, provided it has excellent drainage .
