Description

llumination Flame Foxglove is a revolutionary hybrid that redefines the traditional foxglove experience. Bred by Charles Valin in the UK, this intergeneric cross between the common foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) and the rare Canary Island foxglove (Isoplexis canariensis) combines the hardiness of the former with the exotic, long-blooming character of the latter . The result is a sterile, non-seeding perennial that produces multiple spikes of densely packed, fiery blooms from summer through autumn, offering up to six months of continuous garden color .

Faqs

Q: Is this plant a perennial or an annual?
A: 'Illumination Flame' is a true perennial in mild winter climates (USDA zones 8-10). In colder zones (USDA 7 and below), it should be treated as an annual or overwintered indoors in a cool, bright location . Unlike biennial foxgloves, it does not require a two-year cycle to flower.

Q: Does it need deadheading?
A: While not strictly necessary, removing spent flower spikes encourages additional blooming and keeps the plant looking tidy . Because the flowers are sterile, they will not produce seeds even if left on the plant.

Q: How much sun does it need?
A: It performs best in full sun to partial shade. In cool summer climates, full sun is ideal. In hotter regions, protect from harsh afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch and extend the bloom period .

Q: Is it toxic?
A: Yes, like all foxgloves, all parts of this plant are toxic if ingested and can cause skin irritation . Wear gloves when handling and plant thoughtfully around children and pets.

Q: How tall does it grow?
A: It typically reaches 32-36 inches (80-90 cm) in height, making it a perfect mid-to-back-of-border plant without requiring staking in most situations .

Q: Does it attract pollinators?
A: Absolutely. The tubular, nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds, bees, and other beneficial pollinators throughout the long blooming season .
