Sugar Cane is the towering, sweet grass that fueled empires and remains the world's primary source of natural sugar. This fast-growing perennial forms imposing clumps of tall, jointed stalks that range in color from green to deep burgundy. While commercially processed into sugar, in the home garden it offers the unparalleled pleasure of chewing fresh, juicy stalks for a burst of sweet, grassy nectar or pressing your own fresh, unrefined cane juice. It's a striking architectural plant that brings a taste of the tropics and a piece of agricultural history to any warm, sunny garden.

  • The primary commercial source of sucrose (table sugar), but in the garden, it's grown for fresh chewing and juicing.

  • Forms dense clumps of tall, thick, jointed stalks that can be green, yellow, purple, or striped.

  • A fast-growing, sun-loving giant perennial grass that can reach over 10 feet in a single season.

  • Stalks are filled with sweet, fibrous, juicy pith that can be chewed to extract the juice or pressed.

  • Prefers long, hot, humid growing seasons and consistent moisture.

  • Grown from sections of stalk ("seed cane"), not true seeds.

Garden & Use Profile:

  • Flavor: Pure, clean sweetness with a fresh, vegetal note when chewed or juiced fresh.

  • Texture: Extremely fibrous and hard; the goal is to crush or chew it to release the sweet juice inside.

  • Best Uses: Fresh: Chewing on peeled stalk segments for refreshment. Juicing: Pressing to make fresh, unprocessed sugarcane juice, a popular tropical drink. Ornamental: As a dramatic, fast-growing screen or background plant.

Knowing how we measure the size?

Knowing how we measure the size?

When browsing our plants, you may notice size terms such as Gallon, Multi, or Stand. These describe how a plant is grown, containerized, or structured at the time of sale — not just its height. Understanding these terms will help you choose the right plant for your space and expectations.

🌱 Gallon Size (Container Size)

Gallon refers to the size of the nursery container the plant is currently growing in (e.g. 1 Gallon, 5 Gallon, 15 Gallon).

  • A larger gallon size generally means:

    • A more established root system

    • A sturdier plant

    • Faster visual impact after planting

  • Example:

    • 5 Gallon: Ideal for residential gardens, easy to handle, good balance of value and maturity

    • 15 Gallon: More mature, provides quicker results in the landscape

Note: Gallon size does not guarantee a specific height, as growth varies by species.

🌳 Multi (Multi-Trunk / Multi-Branch Form)

Multi indicates the plant has multiple trunks or main stems growing from the base.

  • Commonly used for:

    • Ornamental trees

    • Feature plants

    • Japanese maples, olives, crepe myrtles, etc.

  • Why choose Multi:

    • Fuller, more sculptural appearance

    • Strong visual presence even at younger ages

    • Popular for design-focused landscapes

🌲 Stand (Single-Trunk / Standard Form)

Stand (short for Standard) refers to a single, dominant trunk with a raised or naturally formed canopy.

  • Commonly used for:

    • Shade trees

    • Street trees

    • Orchard and structural plantings

  • Why choose Stand:

    • Clean, classic tree form

    • Easier clearance for walkways and lawns

    • Preferred for long-term structure and uniformity

🌿 Choosing the Right Size

  • If you want instant impact → larger Gallon, Multi form

  • If you want long-term structure → Stand form

  • If you want flexibility and value → mid-size Gallon containers

If you’re unsure which size or form fits your project, our team is happy to help you select the best option based on your space, timeline, and design goals.

FAQs

Q: Can I grow it from store-bought sugar cane?
A: Sometimes. If you can find fresh, un-waxed, un-treated sugar cane stalks with visible nodes (joints), you can cut them into sections containing 2-3 nodes and plant them horizontally in soil. Stalks meant for sugar processing are often not viable. It's best to get "seed cane" from a nursery.

Q: How do I harvest and use it?
A: Cut mature stalks at the base when they are thick and hard. To chew: Peel off the hard outer layer with a knife and cut the inner pith into manageable pieces. To juice: Feed peeled stalk sections through a sturdy juicer or press.

Q: Is it invasive?
A: It forms a dense, clumping root mass (rhizome) and will spread slowly in place, but it is not typically considered a runner-type invasive like some grasses. However, it is a vigorous, large plant that needs ample space. It can be controlled by physically removing unwanted shoots.

Q: Will it survive winter?
A: It is a tropical plant. A hard frost will kill the tops, but the roots may survive in the ground in Zone 9 and warmer if well-mulched. In colder zones, it is grown as an annual, or stalks can be cut and brought indoors to propagate new plants the next spring.
